Playa Grande Costa Rica

Playa Grande Costa Rica

Playa Grande is one of the most unique beaches in Costa Rica since it features world class surfing along aside a spectacular nature attraction Leatherback turtles that nest on the beaches. Unlike its distant neightbor Tamirindo that is undergoing a building boom Playa Grande is taking a slow measured approach to building along a threatened species.

Playa Grande hotels or lack of hotels is one of the big draws to travelers who want a quieter low-key Costa Rica experience. There are several well known places to stay and ones that we recommend are the Rip Jack Inn, Playa Grande Inn, and La Marejada. they are all located on the southern side of Playa Grande.

Playa Grande Restaurants again there only a few places where we recommend eating but they do serve some good chow. The Rip Jack has food on the higher end but well worth it. And Mar Bar at the La Marejada is very good as well. If you looking for some local Costa Rican dishes or a good pizza we recommend Kike's Place. they don't have a website but when you drive in town just ask and someone will point you a the right direction.

Playa Grande Surfing is said to be some of the best breaks in the country and the best surf shop in town can help you get surfing lessons, rent a surf board, or jsut give you some friendly advice. Ian at Frijoles Locos Surf Shop will hook you up. Frijoles Locos also offered a Costa Rican spa treatments which is great anytime.

Playa Grande from Liberia:

From the Liberia airport turn right when you get to the main road.

Shortly after passing through Filadelfia, make a right turn toward Tamarindo/Playa Grande/Hacienda Pinilla.

After about 20 minutes, you will go over a steep hill and come to a cross-roads town called Huacas. The signs will say to turn left to go to Tamarindo, but you will continue straight for another 5-8 minutes until you reach a small town with a soccer field called Matapalo.

Following the signs to Playa Grande, you will turn left immediately after passing the soccer field. The road will turn to dirt and you will continue for about 10 minutes until you end up in Playa Grande Costa Rica.
